Welcome to A Most Unreliable Narrator, the slice of life newsletter of GenXer around town, Lisa Rabey, where I talk about anything and everything with a bit of swears. Iām glad youāre here.
Dear Internet,
I originally had no intention of writing to you so soon but FB has shadow banned me from posting for three days because I posted a picture of a Thanksgiving menu from a local Roman hotel with āFucking Americansā as one of the comments and I was banned for āagainst community standards.ā As Best Kate pointed out, you can watch murders on FB Live but āslanderā against America. Fuck them bastards.
So, luck you!
We arrived Sunday in Rome and immediately went to the hotel. We did not sleep on the plane though J is convinced I must have gotten about an hour. I was allegedly lightly snoring.
Fun fact: To power the room, you need to slide a card into a slot to complete the circuit. We did not figure this out for a solid 30 minutes and were convinced our power was out. Silly Americans.
After dropping our stuff off at the hotel, we walked across the street Borghese Park and walked around, unintentionally heading to the Galleria Borghese which is a museum chock full of Caravaggios but the museum was out of tickets for the day. We opted to head back to the hotel and get a nap.
We slept for five hours waking up at 22:00 and missing dinner at the hotel and in fact, most of the places around the hotel were closed. We munched on Oreos we bought from a bodega and ended up down at the hotel bar to drink to help us get tired. We started out our session drinking Campari spritzers and nope, not for me. After numerous drinks called Skyscrapers (I do not remember what was in them), we went to bed around 1:30 and slept until 9 so for the most part, we have adjusted to local time. (J felt hungover while I felt fine so he was creaking and hobbling about this morning.)
On our way to the Capuchin Crypt, we stopped at a local restaurant where we watched the Cameroon v Serbia game (3-3) where one of the patrons was a Serb so we got super into the game with him. I had my first caffe of the day along with some scrumptious ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta. J had gnocchi. We have been drinking sparkling water all over the place.
We headed to the Capuchin Crypt and Museum which was highly interesting. They had a Caravaggio!
I did not know this was here so that knocks off a Caravaggio off my list.
(I would have had pictures of the visit but photography and video was not allowed and I was a afraid of the female guard at the end of the tour.)
I bought postcards and a magnet which is my new trinket du jour when I travel. Next, we headed to the Trevi Fountain.
J was shocked at how big Trevi Fountain is. They have closed off some of the viewing areas which is a shame because I have a picture from the last time I was in Rome in one of the crevices laying down on a rock being dramatic. Unfortunately, could not recreate it.
We travelled to the Spanish Steps were we hiked up the steps to the French church at the top and where I took a bunch of pictures. After walking around, we headed back down to the Via di Condotti which is street of nothing but couture shops.
Now, even at my thinnest, I could not fit into most of the clothes available so we stopped in Tiffany where I opted to buy a pair of earrings I have been eyeing for a few years. Yes, I understand the irony of buying an American companyās wares in Italy but one does what one does.
We stopped at quite a few of tourist locations which are fucking everywhere where I bought more magnets such as a close up of Davidās penis painted in Italy flag colors. Before heading to the hotel, we stopped at a tea house for drinks and came home.
J has the next few days jammed with events which Iāve already forgotten. I know weāre going to the Vatican Museum on Tuesday and the Galleria Borghese on Wednesday. Weāre trying to shove as much as humanly possible since weāre here for such a short time.
Iāll post more in a few days with more pictures.
Ciao,
Lisa x
