❄️ lisa writes stuff issue 💻 #49 Writing Around the Interwebs
Less f*cking around; more writing!
Hey internet!
Here is what is happening in my writing world:
RWA NYC Contest
The judges sent out scoresheets not long after they announced the winners. When that email came in, I was anxious. I didn’t want to read what other judges thought of my work because what if they think I suck? What if I really am as terrible as I sometimes think I am?
But curiosity killed the cat, so I read the scoresheets.
And you know, it wasn’t that bad! Two of the three gave me really high scores and the same compliments. The third judge gave me slightly above-average scores and didn’t fill out most of the comments.
Look, I know writing is subjective, but having more than one person think my stuff is pretty good really pumped me up. It also gives me the energy to continue this path.
Writing Around the Interwebs
I’m now writing monthly columns for the International Bipolar Foundation, EveryLibrary, and WriteOn! As you may guess, the topics are all different but definitely in my wheelhouse. The December issues for IBP and EveryLibrary have already been turned in. Their word counts are 800-1000 words, which gives me some wiggle room. WriteOn! Is <500. Which is tight. Very tight. My topic for WriteOn! is to get your book in libraries. There is a lot to say on this topic! I wrote the article and then researched what others were saying. I have more good ideas, but the topic is incredibly long. I’ll figure out something.
For IBF this month, I wrote about being friends with someone who is bipolar. I polled a dozen friends and had them fill out a survey. I used those results to structure the essay. I wasn’t a fan of the ending, but that’s in editing. For EveryLibrary, the topic is interlibrary loans. EveryLibrary caters to the public rather than the profession. The idea is to spread information and knowledge in an informative way, totally up my alley.
Once those articles are live, I’ll post the links below.
More Author Readings Scheduled
As I was in Kentucky in early December, my author reading at a local library was canceled. We’ve rescheduled it for a few days before Valentine’s Day. It’s a romance! Of course, I want to read then!
Nothing else is on the docket.
Promotions
I was in the local newspaper! They do “Life in Leelanau” every week by highlighting a resident. They loved the idea of the book being based in Michigan and my story specifically in the county.
The article was in the print version and is available online. Unfortunately, it is behind a paywall.
Upcoming Projects
I seem to get my groove in the 8-12K word area, so I’ll submit to several anthologies in the upcoming months. The various themes are beach reads, Great Lakes (two separate anthologies), historical romance, and heroines. There's lots of room to play with, and I’m excited. I need to stop being mindless on the internet and get going somewhere. I join writing sprints every week and work on other shit instead! Bad Lisa, no cookie.
