things i consume: Issue #1 May 2019
New feature sent on the first of the month; here are things I am consuming:
Now that "Fixer Upper" is no longer on the air, Buzzfeed recounts the history of Waco, TX, its resurgence in growth and posterity which is mostly due to the Gaines and their empire.
A very serious review of a Spice Girls concert.
A few weeks ago, The New York Times did an interactive feature on the mess that is Gen X. Be forewarned, there is a lot of content here. I'm still going through it.
The confidence that 50 is the new 20 gives me strength as 50 winks at me around the corner.
Lizzo and her flute playing ways took over Coachella and she is every single thing people are saying and more. Perfect jams of self-empowerment and girl power AND Lizzo is unabashedly naked on her album cover for Cuz I Love You. Teaser lyrics from "Soulmate": Cause I'm my own soulmate / I know how to love me / I know that I'm always gonna hold me down / Yeah, I'm my own soulmate / No, I'm never lonely / I know I'm a queen but I don't need no crown / Look up the mirror like damn she the one. It's a goddamn perfect album.
If you're not watching Schitt's Creek, what have you been doing with your life? Then follow @goldenschitts on Insta for your Golden Girls/Schitt's Creek mashups.
Have you seen Fleabag yet on Amazon Prime? The Brit dramedy follows an unnamed female protagonist and she navigates love and loss with raunchy jokes and witty sides with the occasional fourth wall breaking. (The last bit is cleverly used and not as awful as you think it may be.) The show is absolutely perfect and the second season will break your heart.
Speaking of Fleabag, Andrew Scott plays Hot Priest in the second season. You may know Scott from the reboot of Sherlock where he played Moriarty but Scott is also a huge theater star in addition to his movie/TV work. The Hot Priest character is unabashedly sexy and I'll never hear the words "kneel" without having impure thoughts ever again.
TEH and I go through a lot of sparkle water. Last Costco trip, we bought 5 24 bottle cases of sparkle water and there were gone within a month. We alternate with Waterloo which TEH loves the watermelon and I'm partial to the grape flavor.
Two things in common: I hate socks and I walk a lot so obviously I get blisters. A friend hooked me with Foot Glide and it's been a lifesaver.
I've been getting my brows professionally done lately and I've decided my makeup regime is brows on fleek and red lipstick. I layer my lips with Mac Primer and add either Fenty Ma'damn or Beseame Red Velvet which was the color worn by Agent Carter in her short-lived series. Both lipsticks claim you don't need to outline but I do with Sephora's It's Cherry. I top it off with Too Faced Lip Injection Supreme which does shit all but at least the gloss isn't sticky. Both lipsticks wear evenly and stay on pretty well throughout the day with only a touch up here and there.
If $14 (or $28) seems too much to pay for lip gloss, I don't blame you. This Essence Shine Shine Shine lipgloss was recommended ot me when I was at ULTA the other day and it's just as good as the Too Faced version. Best thing though? It's $3.
Frog Leap Studios is a one man band who takes just about any song and turns it into heavy metal. Perhaps a metal version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" or Frozen's "Let It Go" will entice you. You can listen to his dozens and dozens of covers on Spotify.
Did you know I reviewed graphic novels for No Flying, No Tights? Here are my latest reviews.
Oh sweet Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Love Island. A British reality TV show where it starts with 10 singles (equal boys and girls) who join a villa in Majorca for the summer with zero contact with the outside world while they are inside. Each boy and girl must couple up and remain coupled up through their 6-8 week stay in the villa. The catch though is new boys and girls are brought in to shake things up and TV audiences vote who stays and goes. The winning couple wins £50,000. Over 150 episodes and we're down to the last 19. I've been baiting my British friends on social media that we watch this trash but no one has bitten. If you need something trashy, drama-filled, with loads of big hair, boobs, and veneer teeth, this is the show to watch. It's on Hulu.
As most of you know, I am a collector of fine t-shirts ranging from pop culture to places and everything in between. At one point, I had over 200. My pal Jen Talley is a creator of such fine wares and I'm obsessed to say I own seven of her designs and I just eyed a few more I want. If you're into pop culture t-shirts, check out her TeePublic store.
That's it for this month; see you next time!
