A Most Unreliable Narrator Issue #82 A Frank Discussion on Being Fat Part 3
Weight: A scale
Mood: “I’ve got a text!”
In the recent past, I wrote frank discussions on being fat (#1 and #2) and it’s time to pick up that thread.
Back in February, I was super excited about TEH and I doing Noom, which concentrates more on the psychology of how you eat rather than just act as a calorie counter. It seemed to work albeit slowly. By the end of May I had lost about 20lbs and TEH lost about 50lbs. (Stupid younger men with fast metabolisms.) I felt like I was eating better and figuring things out. I was trying to exercise when my back wasn’t throwing itself out.
But by the middle of May, everything changed.
I still don’t know what changed exactly.
Well, that’s not quite the truth.
What really threw us off was when we got to the Throbbing Cabin in early June for the summer. This place may be remote and going out may take a hot minute but we took 100% advantage of what was available from fresh baked goods using local fruit to pubs and restaurants. Junk food was everywhere and we couldn’t stop. It also did not help that my MIL, who is diabetic mind, needed some kind of sugar in the house all the time and it wasn’t always just one thing but a number of things. Have you ever had frozen Twinkies? They are delicious.
We also rationalized that in Louisville, a local Mexican restaurant that is within walking distance was okay because the food was homemade on the spot and it was fairly healthy with not a lot of fattening ingredients. When we were last back in Louisville for a week, we ate there three times because it was quick, easy, local to the house, and tasted good. We had opted to not go to the grocery store when we were back so nearly every meal was take out of something scrounged from the cupboards.
So, our food was off and our exercise was sporadic. TEH and I tried to go hiking a lot but my back and his back and hips kept throwing out. He once bent over to work on our mailbox only to throw out his back so badly, he couldn’t do a lot of anything for about six weeks.
Since we’ve been up here in the last two months, I’ve gained 5lbs and TEH has gained 20.
(He says as fast as it comes off is also as fast as it goes on.)
We’ve been trying to pivot back on the rails but something happens where our resolve comes down. It’s so much easier to drive to the village to get pizza than firing up the grill and grilling veggies and meat. (Charcoal grill take ages.) Also another favorite: Let’s head down to the local pub and try our hand at tasting all the beers and ciders on draft? Yes please.
And it’s always starting back up on Monday where we’ll be good and do better.
And at some point during the week, we fall apart.
I’m tired of falling apart.
Wonderful Thing
Ted Lasso (AppleTV+). If you haven’t started watching this supremely amazing comedy, what is wrong with you? It’s a feel good comedy without being schmaltzy and they make the characters whole and real without making them one-dimensional. Well, that’s great and all but what is about? The owner of AFC Richmond (#WeAreRichmond), a soccer club in UK. Goal isn’t to bring the team to championship but to tear it down to piss off her ex-husband. Her strategy? Hire an American football coach (Ted Lasso) who knows nothing about soccer. Hijinks ensue. No, seriously, we NEED Ted Lasso right now in our life with the ocean on fire, the west coast burning in tune to Dante’s Inferno, and SE being bathed in storms. #beleive
